Blog - Year one

July 22, 2011   Forrest turned 1 today.  He had a few visitors so he got to play and run hard.

July 7, 2011   Forrest got to meet the puppies today.  He's going to be a great big brother.  He has been extremely patient throughout this whole puppy stuff.  Here's a link to a video.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5f5d5EYp3I

June 12, 2011  We went to Williams Lake today and Forrest had his eyes tested by Dr. Lewis.  Great news CERF clear.  Gonio - 95% normal in one eye and even a bit better in the other eye.

May 15, 2011    Forrest is starting to become a water maniac.  He really loves being down at the water and swimming.  Took all the dogs in for weighing today and Forrest is still 62 lbs, but he is definitely taller.

May 8, 2011  The lake has finally melted and I was able to get the dogs in the water.  This is the first time Forrest has had an opportunity to actually go swimming and retrieve.  When we got to the lake I threw a bumper and he went straight in and retrieved the bumper and brought it back to me.  He went wide on his return but still brought it to me.  He swims very smoothly.  No splashing.   We did lots of water retrieves then headed home to pick up Eve (who isn't allowed in the water right now) and then took all 3 of the dogs for a short walk.  It was a great Mother's day.

April 22, 2011  Forrest is 9 months old today.  I finally got around to taking him to the vets to be weighed and he is 62 lbs.  We are still working on attention.  He's starting to get a a bit better.  I'm starting to see a little stubborn streak come out.  He still has separation problems if left in a crate in the house.  He doesn't mind being in his crate in the car though.  I think because in the house he usually can see the girls and wants to be with them.

April 8,9,10, 2011   Forrest was entered in his first conformation show in Chilliwack.  He was entered for 3 of the 4 days at the Renaissance Dog Show.  We arrived on the Thursday, so it gave me some time to get him used to the buildings and surroundings.  It didn't take him very long to calm down in the building and walk nicely on leash.  Fridays' show was a bit chaotic, he was all over the place.  I entered him in the puppy sweeps on Saturday and he was starting to settle in a bit better.  So he showed a bit nicer in the regular show.  On Sunday I asked Catherine Preece to take him in the ring so I could see how he moves in the ring.  (the ring was really really small).  He showed great with Catherine and took Winners Male.  Catherine also took him into the breed ring because I had to take Eve in.    His sister Raven was also shown by Catherine on sunday and they got RWB and best FC puppy.

Here are some video's from the Renaissance Show (some of my info on the videos are incorrect, still recovering from my trip)

Friday - Forrest Junior Puppy Male

Saturday - Forrest Puppy Sweeps, Jr. Puppy Male - this group was done in 2 steps, large dogs first then small dogs.  The handler (me) fussed waaaaaay too much with Forrest.

Saturday - Forrest Junior Puppy Male - I need to work on my handling style and I need to get more control of his head.  I'm giving him way to much lead.  Trying to show him like I do Eve, who basically shows herself.

Sunday - Forrest Junior Puppy Male - Shown by Catherine Preece - Forrest goes on to take WINNERS MALE -  Note:  Judge is Ainslie Mills not B. Phillips

Sunday - Eve & Forrest BOB Ring - Eve shown by me and Forrest shown by Catherine Preece  (note: says Raven is in this one, but she's not & Judge is Ainslie Mills not B. Phillips)

Sunday - Forrest & Raven FC Puppy - Raven wins best FC Puppy

April 3, 2011 -   Forrest is growing up nicely.  Weighs about 62 lbs.  He's now a bit taller than Cynder, so I would say he is 23 1/2-24" tall.  We have been working on control and sits at the community centre parking lot.   He still destroys things including bedding etc.  I left him in my car for a few minutes and he ate my sunglasses.  He tends to stress a bit when he is left by himself.  He is a very soft boy and is willing to please.  Eve has just gone into season and so far all he has done is sniff her.  Let's hope that continues for awhile.  He is entered as a Junior puppy at the upcoming Renaissance trial in Chilliwack and we will all be staying in the trailer together.  We have done a bit of conformation practicing also.  He has his good days and his real puppy days.  I'm just hoping I can get his attention in the ring.

Mar 16, 2011   Took a few shots today to register him with the AKC.  He's 7 1/2 months.

Feb 22, 2011   Forrest turns 7 months today.  He weighs 58 lbs and is approx 23 inches at the withers.  We have been working on a new way to get him to stand from a down.  It seems to be working.

Feb 12, 2011  Forrest attended his first agility trial this week-end.  He was awesome.  I was concerned he might be a pain in the butt in the pen with the girls, but he behaved himself.   We have been crating him at night and it has been going very well.  So when we went away this week-end he was a very good boy in his crate in the bedroom with us.  Anna took a few pictures of him.  You can see them in his photo album.

February 3, 2011  Forrest is 56.4 lbs and is now taller than Eve but not quite as tall of Cynder so I'd say 22 + inches.  We have been trying to get Forrest to wait quietly in his pen in the mornings and wait for us to get up.  Up to now he has had freedom in a crated area with access to the outside to go to the bathroom.  He started to bark when he was going out about 5:30ish in the morning.  So we decided to lock him in his pen (the girls are already locked in a pen next to him).  The first few nights when he whined & barked I would get up and let him out then put him back into his pen.  He would be quiet until we got up.  This morning though, I thought "wow" either he's being a real good boy or someone came in the middle of the night and doggy napped him.  Well neither of those things happened.  He had managed to unlatch the door on his pen and had his regular freedom back.   The latch was on the inside of the pen just because that's how it ended up coming together but I have now reversed that panel.  Let's see what happens tonight.

On the up side, I have started to work on his stack.  I am going to teach him a bit different than the way I taught Eve.  I want him to plant his back feet and move forward with his front till in position.  First thing I had to do was to just get him to stand instead of sit.  Then I want him to put his back feet on a mat and hold them there.  I will fade the mat out later.  At the end of the first lesson, he was putting his back feet on the mat, sometimes standing, sometimes sitting down

January 24, 2011  Today we worked on get it game.  Forrest is to sit until I release him to his tug.  Lots of fun.  He enjoyed this game.  Also decided to bring the wire crate into the living room.  I need to control his playing.  He is starting to play a little rough with Eve and she seems to go along with it.  Yesterday when he met his litter mate again, he pounced on her with a growl.  They eventually played together really well, but I have to make sure to keep on top of this.  Tried to do some bird work, but Forrest wanted nothing to do with the bird.  He did retrieve his bumper though.  I am trying to get Terry to work him in hunt.

January 22, 2011  Forrest is 6 months old today.  He weighs 52 lbs and is approx 21 or so inches tall at the withers.  We worked on the stool yesterday then went for a nice walk in the afternoon.

January 13, 2011  We did some conformation work today.  First taught Forrest to touch a target stick with his nose (it was more of a bite the stick) and used this to have him follow it forward and away from me a bit.   Put a show collar/leash on him while we worked to make sure he recognises the difference in obedience.  He did very well.  he's starting to do the ramp up to the bed on his own again.  He's still going through a fear period, so wonder what will be next.  We've had snow coming down for days now and not able to get out.  Once the roads are better I am hoping to take him to town by himself so he gets used to other things.

January 1, 2011  Weighs 49 lbs and is approx 21" tall at the withers.  Growing like a weed.  We started on our crate games yesterday.  Forrest doesn't have a problem going in the crate but he doesn't like when he is left alone.  Especially when the other dogs are not in sight.  Today we dremeled his nails again.  He is treated the whole time I am doing it so when he hears the dremel he runs to it.  Hope this continues.  He also loves to have his teeth brushed with the electric toothbrush.  He has been teething lately so I make sure to be very gentle and of course everything goes into the mouth.   He has a bit of a problem with shaky things under his feet like my large grooming table (it's pretty sturdy but does shake now and them) and the ramp to get up on the bed.  Not sure but I think the ramp fell down when he was going up it one day.  I found it on the floor so one of the dogs had managed to dislodge it.  So now he is hesitant to use it, but eventually runs up it real fast.  I'll be working on the grooming table soon.

Dec 22, 2010   Forrest is 5 months old today.  Weighs 45.4 lbs and is all legs and skinny.  We've been working on getting him to go onto a board and have it tip.  He's picking it up very quickly.   He also does the tunnel by just following the girls through.

Dec 6, 2010  Weighs 38.8 lbs.   Forrest went to his first hunt practice yesterday.  Had no problem with the sound of the starter guns going off.  At first wouldn't pick up the bird until his sister Raven came and stole it right from under him.  After that the came was on.  He eventually took the bird out of my hand and walked around like a peacock showing off and making sure that Raven didn't get it.  Go to my flickr page for pictures.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5236638508/in/set-72157624973297996/  http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5236046449/in/set-72157624973297996/  http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5236637844/in/set-72157625337113283/  http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5236043167/in/set-72157625337113283/

Nov 28, 2010   We worked on healing today.  Forrest is doing really well.  Gets a little distracted at times, but still comes back to it.  Here's a video showing his 3rd practice set on his self healing.  click here

Nov 22, 2010  Forrest is 4 months old today and weighs 34.6lbs and is 19 3/4" tall at the withers.  We've had lots of snow and cold weather lately and Forrest is loving it.  He's been very excited and is getting into everything.  Its -23C outside right now so we won't be going for any kind of walk real soon.

Nov 17, 2010  Forrest weighs 33 lbs. and is really looking lean and lanky.  He's figured out the flat coat fun stuff of eating poop and has been so kind as to bring it into the house.  We've been getting snow and Forrest really loves it like the other dogs.    Oh yeah, and he's lifting his leg now.  I'm so proud.

Nov 14, 2010  Forrest loves his walks around the lake.  I've been walking him off leash and he's really good at hanging close.  We've been working on his take it command.  So far he is putting his mouth on the bumper.  Won't take him long to get a good take it and a hold.  He's still doing great in the mornings.  He doesn't get into things he shouldn't.  Well, except he likes to pick up one of the mats and bring it to me.  He tends to take socks etc and run with them.

Nov 8, 2010   We went for a nice walk around the lake today, cold but sunny.  A few hours later Forrest got to experience his first snow.  At night, I am now letting him sleep loose with Cynder and Eve downstairs.  Its been great.  I'm finally getting some sleep.  Now all I have to do is get Cynder to stop whining when she wants fed in the morning and it would be perfect.  Forrest is getting in the routine of brushing his teeth.  He lines up with the girls and lets me use the electric toothbrush lightly in his mouth, with the great tasting toothpaste of course.

Check out my Flickr account for some of today's photos.    http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5159095379/     http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5159095043/in/photostream/   http://www.flickr.com/photos/radford_retrievers/5160301354/in/photostream/

Nov 5, 2010  Forrest is 30 lbs.   He has finally figured out the doggy door and uses it all the time when he has to go to the bathroom.  I have been leaving him loose with the girls in the basement whenever I have to go out for any period of time and he has done great.  Still waking up at 5:30 and making a lot of noise to be let out.  Have tried the gentle approach, the more forceful approach and nothing works.  He will be quiet for a few seconds then just starts up again.  He is very stubborn about this.

Oct 30, 2010  Forrest is coming along with his sits and downs.  Loves to retrieve things.  Especially my slippers.  Only put on 1 lb this week.  Watched his first agility class today.  He was great in the x-pen with the girls.  Very quiet.  Not so sure that would happen if he was by himself in the pen.  He can be very vocal when he wants out.  Went for his first walk in town a couple of days ago and did great with all the sounds etc.  Doesn't seem to have a problem when left in his crate in the car. (the girls are also in the car).

Oct 18, 2010  Forrest had his distemper and parvo shots today.  Had to go to Kamloops as no one around here will give individual shots.  Forrest weighs 23 1/2 lbs.

Oct 4, 2010  10 1/2 wks old - weighs 19 1/2 lbs.   We've been working on our retrieve.  Forrest will pick up and bring back to hand a paint roller, a small bumper, a small dokken and a ball.  He's starting to figure out the clicker stuff.  He's starting to show his "lots of attitude" side.  He's also showing his affectionate side.

Sept 28, 2010 Been working on box work with the clicker.  Forrest picked up quickly.  He will pick the box up and bring it to me.  Also introduced him to a paint roller.  He also picked that up and brought it to me.

Sept 26, 2010 Slept in until after 6 again.  Have found the key is to keep the other dogs isolated in another room.  Had his first nail trimming today.  With help of my husband and lots of treats, he didn't even notice.

Happy Puppy just over 9 wks old

Sept 24, 2010     Forrest is settling down nicely at night.  Waking up between 4 & 5 for a pee then settles back down again until 6 and 7.  He is usually wakend by the other dogs.  Eve and him play together great.  They love to rough house/bitey face.  Took Forrest for a walk in the valley without the girls, only with Gunny.  At first he was unsure of Gunny as Gunny wants to play and he's a bit rough right now.  But they eventually got to play a bit once Gunny laid down.   I started working on clicker training with him.  We have worked on his name and "here".  He picked it up pretty good.  Comes already to his name and here.  He also sits nicely for a treat.

Sept 22, 2010  Forrest slept through the night last night.  Went to bed at 10 and woke up at 6:00.  Yeah..  Forrest had his first outing today.  We went to the lake and he just followed the other dogs into the water.  He had a great time.  We then went to the Valley, one of my favourite look out places.  He was very tired by the time we got home.

Sept 20, 2010  Forrest weighs in at 16 lbs today.  He is 8 1/2 weeks old.

September 18 & 19, 2010  We had a long day today.  Lots to do before we head home.  Visit with other flat coat people, pick up some raw food, take Eve to have her OFA x-rays done.  It was 4:00 by the time we finished our running around and started our long trip home.  Forrest was a real little trooper.  It took about 4 1/2 hours to get home with a stop to pick something up for dinner, feed the dogs dinner and have a pee.  I was about 1/2 away from home when Forrest finally started to whine so I pulled over, he went pee, and we got right back on the road.  He was a great little traveller.  Of course Eve was in the crate with him.  His first night at his forever home wasn't too bad.  I put him in his new crate and laid down beside the crate until he fell asleep.  He woke up around 3:00 with lots of noise.  I waited to see if he'd fall back to sleep but no, so I got up and took him outside.  he went pee and I laid with him again for a short while until he fell back to sleep.  He woke up again around 6:00.  I think the other dogs had something to do with that.  Later in the day I needed to go do some work outside and I knew he was sleepy so I put him in his crate and went outside.  He barked and whined the whole time I was outside.  Once I came in and sat near his crate he was a happy boy and went to sleep.   So far we have only had one poop in the house.  He has learned how to go through the doggy door.  Not totally on his own yet.

September 16-17, 2010  Forrest formerly Mr. Blue Boy, came to live with us today.  He is a very nicely put together little boy with great attitude.  The ride from Anna's to my daughter's was very noisy indeed.  I put him in a small crate and put it on the front seat so I could keep an eye on him and he hollered/barked/whined all the way.  It was almost deafening.  I was a little concerned what might happen in the evening.  We were staying at my daughters in an apartment.  I put Forrest and Eve together in a wire crate next to my bed and he settle down nicely.  Around 2 in the morning ( I was still awake) Forrest was panting, I think it was too warm for him, so I let Eve out of the crate and moved the bedding aside and added a wet towel.  He really liked this and settle right down and slept until 6:30.  I had errands to run throughout the day so I had to use the soft sided crate behind the truck seats and put both Eve and Forrest inside.  While I was driving I could hear him chewing on the inside of the crate.  Nothing major, thank goodness.  He traveled much better this time.   We had no accidents while we were in the apartment.  I made sure to carry him to the elevator when we were going out.  After the first day, he got the idea and would go for a quick pee and turn around and start running back to the building, then run down the hallway.  It really helped to have Eve with me.  Whenever he got tired he'd go to the crate and lay down.
